Behind every great hero lies a great villain. Luke Skywalker to Darth Vader. Jabba The Hutt to Princess Leia. Billy Butcher to Homelander. One of the greatest adversaries that the Manhattan Clan has ever faced was the man David Xanatos himself. And this episode cemented it. The Manhattan Clan has now made its new home in the clock tower attic above the Police station Elisa Maza works at. However, Goliath is still bitter at Xanatos taking possession of Castle Wyvern, which only gets exacerbated when Xanatos starts a ploy to damage their reputations and force them to accept a deal with him.
In the span of an opening scene, David Xanatos and Owen were in a sparring match. Xanatos lost but instead of acting like a typical bad boss, he took it with grace. Xanatos: You've been practicing. This is the first time I've ever lost a match to you. Owen: Would you rather I pretend to lose? Xanatos: I'd fire you if you did. Lex Luthor ain't got nothing on him! He's no doubt one of the most successful villains ever! The whole episode was really a game of chess between Xanatos and the Manhattan Clan. The Gargoyles won the first round but Xanatos gained something out of it still. The fact that he managed to go toe to toe with Goliath is a feat in itself. So it managed to make not only the Manhattan Clan look competent but also elevates Xanatos's status even more. Now compare and contrast that and Demona. Speaking of...Eh, I'm just going to skip that one. Short version. So she lost to a Retired Badass Gargoyle named Hudson. Outside of being hot I'm still trying to figure out what the appeal of the character is. Simply put, Xanatos is awesome while Demona can hit the road. Now comes the next review. "Her Brother's Keeper". Or I should proudly dub it "The Roasting of Derrick Maza"!

Outside of being hot I'm still trying to figure out what the appeal of the character is. Simply put, Xanatos is awesome while Demona can hit the road. Now comes the next review. "Her Brother's Keeper". Or I should proudly dub it "The Roasting of Derrick Maza"! Diabolical! Yeah, Xanatos had class. He was basically Lex Luthor mixed with Terry Silver for a Kid's Show and he's still one of the most memorable villains in Fiction despite the 90's Animated Standards. Toon Villains these days just can't measure up to his standards. Even if you've beaten him, Xanatos will usually come out with a consolation prize while acting like an absolute boss! Demona is just weird. You'd think that after all of that time on her own, even if she didn't learn martial arts, she'd have refined her fighting skills enough to be a considerable threat. Heck, my interpreation of her, as someone who gradually lost her sanity over the years of her isolation, would have a more feral fighting style. Like, she'd start off reasonably calm in a fight, for Demona anyway, but would gradually lose her cool in a fight and start becoming more feral and vicious, almost disturbingly like Bronx, and she has difficulty reigning herself back in. Basically, picture Demona going Ratigan on someone. It would provide a nice contrast to not only the other Gargoyles but Xanatos as well along with making him question if immortality is worth it seeing what the years of isolation have done to Demona. Spending time with Xanatos over the story, as well as civilization in general, does help her mental state over the course of the series but....you know, City Of Stone and all that. Buuuut now I'm rewriting Demona completely so lets get back on topic: Derrick Maza is a clown and I am so looking forward to the roast in the next update.

"Deadly Force"
Broadway watches a Western and becomes enamored with guns, even going so far as to start playing with Elisa's (loaded!) gun. He accidentally shoots her with her own firearm, and she nearly dies.
Um...OK this is me getting real here. So if it comes off like I'm rambling its because I just finished rewatching this particular episode and if you saw the image you know what kind of episode I am talking about.
There is a particular trope I utterly despise. It's the Fat Comic Relief trope. When you have one fat character among a group of MCs and the only contribution is he's a bumbling idiot. Who'd usually screw things up for the heroes. It's one thing if they're used in a sitcom format but in a series like this it can get really grating. Especially when their whole character is to just be a stumbling bumbling clown. So personally speaking I consider this episode the prime example of how utterly rage inducing this trope is.
Out of all the team Gargoyles characters Broadway is the one member I didn't like. While Brooklyn and Lexington would go and get their character development Broadway continues to be the clown of the group, whose main characteristic is either stuffing his face or make an ass of himself. So when this episode pop in I wanted to see how my view of it would change through recent lense.
Anyone familiar with Gargoyles know where I'm gong with this. He finds a gun, plays with it like a fucking idiot, accidently shoots Elisa, runs away like a bitch. Then spends the whole episode not owning up to what he did till Goliath came close to almost killing the wrong person. Granted the wrong person was Dracon but still.
Now keep in mind, up until this point, we don't know if Elisa had esperience a life or death situation. Yeah she's a cop but, based on what the show says, this is the first time she has been fatally shot. By the galactically stupidest character possible!!!!
What I find even worse is how easily Elisa forgave him. Any person would be well within their right to hold a grudge at least till Broadway has made some serious atonement to earn that forgiveness. Which he didn't. Hell the only reason he fessed up was because the situation pressured him into doing it!! The fact that he came dangerously close to killing or crippling Elisa, fuck him. I don't give a shit that he ended up with Angela later and personally she deserved better.
This episode made me want to apologize for some of the negative things I have said regarding Hunk in Voltron: Legendary Defender. Sure he's a fat comic relief but at least he contributes to something. Hell even Bulk from Power Rangers contributed to something and had better character development!
While I do get on Derrick for being a dumbass at least its done in a fun little roast. Also at least Derrick redeemed himself in my eyes. Broadway never did.

Honestly, you could make the argument that Demona is insane or has some form of mental illness. Broadway is just an idiot. It's been a long time since I watched but I can't remember anything particular about him. While I get the idea behind a rather extreme episode about gun safety the set up was a bit messy and required Eliza to leave her loaded gun laying around and I just see her as being too smart for that. Also, Static Shock did it better. The whole thing would've worked better if Eliza was shot on the job, either by Dracon/One of his men or Demona shooting her from behind when she's busy with something else to frame the thugs for it to prove her point to Goliath and get Eliza out of the way. Broadway could've still learned his lesson about the difference between real life and media and the Clan as a whole would have to come to terms with the comparative fragility of their dear friend. If you want to bring in Xanatos he could play a part in saving her life with his advanced technology in exchange for a favor in the future. Eliza would then have to talk Goliath and The Clan out of going out for revenge. She's a police officer and she wants to bring in the shooter to face justice so she wants to investigate the place where she was shot. Episode proceeds from there, balancing Eliza's ptsd and recovery with her soldering on and demonstrating her inner strength and detective skills. Eventually she tracks down one of Dracon's men who was there that night and yes he was on guard duty on the outside but HE wasn't the one who shot her. At least, he's pretty sure he didn't....because someone, or something, jumped him, beat the daylights out of him, and stole his gun. Eliza interrogates him further and discovers something interesting: While the whole thing is a bit of a blur....he's pretty sure that his assailant hit him from behind and above...like a divebomb jump kick or something.... Now, who does Eliza know that would be able to stealthily fly in, quietly surprise attack someone like that, easily overpower a street tough, steal his weapon, use it to attempt to take out Eliza, and would want her out of the way to set Goliath on a revenge rampage? Kinda thrown together but it's a more intriguing episode than 'Broadway is an idiot' even if I get the attempt. And yeah, Broadway's style of character is just played out. The big dummy needs a revamp as a character. Hunk would in fact be a good example. He's The Big Guy but he's a genuine member of the team regardless who keeps up with the team and doesn't drag anyone down. Plus, the Mall Episode was great. Even other media have been gradually sliding away from that. Blackbeard is as insane as Luffy but has his moments of genuine brilliance and has been built up as a massive threat to the world. MHA gave us Fat Gum who is basically a professional hero version of Blob. One Punch Man gave us Pig God who, yes, is an eating machine but he's a hero regardless and harder working than you'd expect. Even Power Rangers has given us Fat Villains/Monsters who manage to be genuine threats to the Heroes. Terror Toad being the most infamous example of course! Hell, Mystic Force/Magiranger gave us Toad of the Ten Terrors who captures and imprisoned the literal Team Mom for a prolonged amount of time and then exploded her with an energy blast when the Rangers tried to rescue her! If it hadnt' been for Magic Hax, she would've been gone and his plan to rain Poison Frogs around the world would've gone off without a hitch! On the heroic side, Bulk's character development over the course of the series with Skull cannot be understated. The dude is a legend with everything he's done. Even in Dragonball, they at least occasionally remember that Fat Buu is still a powerhouse.

He even managed to be helpful in Trunks' Timeline in Super by grabbing injured fighters and running them to safety so they could recover from the fighting with Zamasu and Goku Black.

Elisa Maza is suspicious of David Xanatos and thus she and her brother, fellow Police officer Derek, follow him via helicopter. Meanwhile, Hyena and Jackal are pursuing there own scheme, which puts them on a collision course with Xanatos. When the Mazas intervene to stop the Pack members, Derek manages to impress Xanatos with his piloting skills under pressure and offers him employment at his company. However, Elisa is well aware that the scheming businessman has his ulterior motives and seeks to persuade her brother not to accept his proposition.
Oh man oh man I'm going to enjoy roasting this fool! After the BS that was Deadly Force this is a early christmas present for me!

Oh man oh man I'm going to enjoy roasting this fool! After the BS that was Deadly Force this is a early christmas present for me! Calling Derek stupid would be a term that I'd consider beneath a man of his caliber. And the moment David Xanatos first laid eyes on him he knew he saw potential. See Xanatos has an eye for people. He had it when he met Demona, and had one hell of a one night stand that he won't forget. That's my headcanon and I'm sticking with it. I'm sure Xanatos's first impression was a wide eyed idealistic young man that he could probably mold into a potential minion one day. But the more he got to know Derek the more he has come to the realization. But Xanatos would never call him that. Never. No matter how glaringly obvious it is. Plus he doesn't feel that word suits him. You see, Derek Maza is the kind of guy that if you look at him and you look at Elisa I'm pretty sure the first thought Dave must've had was if they share the same gene pool? Because you have someone as sharp as Elisa then you have..Derek. I'm not going to point it out but I have a theory as to why Derek was like that. And it explains a whole lot. So no. It would be out of character for Xanatos to call Derek or even consider him stupid. The best term that Xanatos would use to define Derek would be, Idiot Savant. And that is the most advanced form of stupid that best fits a man of Derek's caliber. So I would like to thank this episode for introducing a character as intriguing as Derek Maza.

But yeah, how on Earth best girl Eliza retained her sanity looking after this idiot for so long is a mystery for the ages...though I guess it would give her some experience in handling Broadway. What happens coming up to Derek is honestly his own fault ultimately and it's a good lesson on why Rick&Morty had the Jerry Daycare Center. We can all be happy however that Derrick Blackburn is nowhere near as dimwitted as this buffoon. Ramona wouldn't be stalking interested in him otherwise.

Knowing her she'd want to know if their stupidity is just an act to throw someone off. Speaking of. Sure Malty would come off as a ditz at times but that's her M.O. to throw people off their game. Lets be honest do you honestly think Han or Chidori would bother with her if she actually was a ditz? I think not

Soooo....he's basically Gargoyles equivalent of Homer? Annnd now you can't unsee it! Priscilla is the same way. She comes off as completely off her rocker, and she is, but there's a great deal of wisdom and malice laying just beneath the surface. She wouldn't have made it into the Elder Council if she was just insane.
