Gargoyles is a show I'd always consider an animated series that was way ahead of its time. Even by today's standards. It was also unique when compared to other Disney animated shows during that time. It was the only Disney animated show that wasn't afraid to tackle adult themes nor didn't dumb things down for the sake of being family-friendly. In fact, it was the prime example that you can tell a good story while still gearing toward kids. So, as a tribute to the series, I'm going to review each episode to see how well it holds up or how I see the series through current eyes. The review scale goes like this Awesomesauce: An episode so awesome it has a sauce named after it. Worth My Time: You didn't feel cheated by watching an episode. And it's good enough to stick with you Good Enough: Just a plain good episode. Time Waster: Not bad but not good either. Filler Time: When an episode is so forgettable that it feels like a filler. What The Hell Was That?!!: An episode so bad that your brain tries to comprehend what it just saw. The Kylo Rating: Lord help any episode that gets this

Episode I Awakening: Part I - V 1,000 years ago, the gargoyles protected the inhabitants of Castle Wyvern from Viking invaders. However, humans remain distrustful of their heroes. Then one night, an event changes everything. This is the first of a multi-part debut episode titled Awakening. The first episode is considered an origin story of where the Gargoyles came from. Looking at this episode with a recent lens it's baffling just how 90s the series can be by fashion standards at least. To be fair, I tend to find today's fashion rather questionable. Right off the bat we are introduced to one of the main characters Elisa Maza. If you want an example of a strong female character this is one of the examples. Upon introduction, she scouts an intense fight that is happening on top of a large skyscraper, which will be revealed later. And she establishes her cop instincts by ensuring that civilians don't get caught in the crossfire. That right there showcases just how likable Detective Maza is as a character. Going forward we are introduced to a flashback that takes us to the Dark Ages as the main Gargoyles: Goliath, Hudson, Broadway, Brooklyn, Lexington, and Bronx are protectors of Castle Wyvern and it was a Before The Dark Times kind of scenario. The Gargoyles help the king of that castle protect his realm against the Vikings, plus Goliath and Demona were a thing. Oh boy do I have a few things to say about Demona but that'll come later. Goliath was considered the leader of the clan while Hudson is like his Obi-Wan. The good thing for Goliath is Hudson never died. The other Gargoyles, Brooklyn, Lexington, Broadway, and Bronx are your textbook supporting cast. Brooklyn is the more moralistic of the group and it plays into his potential role as the second in command later in the series. Lexington comes off as the trickster archetype but of the lovable kind. Broadway? Ugh. He's the only one I never liked. Because his only character trait is he's the Fat Comedy Relief. Every scene he's in involves him stuffing his face or being a bumbling buffoon. Bronx I find confusing. He's a Gargoyle yet he acts like a dog? I'd chalk that one up as being part of a subspecies of Dog/Gargoyle. Yet each of them plays their roles perfectly and there wasn't a time when I felt they've been completely useless. Then you have Demona. The most overrated character in Gargoyles. Not sorry. I mean, upon the first introduction, she intimidated a human she was protecting. Then the menacing red eyes might as well say I'm Evil on them. Nothing complex about her. Just a one-note character. Yet she's Goliath's soul mate. My theory is that he chose her because, out of the other female Gargoyles, she's the most attractive. Hey, he was young and hormones got in the way. It happens. Let's say you just watched this, a savvy viewer would've pinned her as a villain on the spot. All that was missing was her looking at the audience and brag how much she's going to ruin everyone's day And everything in the flashback leads to one hell of a Wham Moment. Then the rest of the episode deals with The Gargoyles dealing with being in the then-modern era of NY. While gradually learning that Xanatos isn't their friend but the villain of the story. Then come to discover that Demona is alive and well and is working with Xanatos. I have a theory. And I don't care what anyone says I say it's true. Demona and Xanatos had a one-night stand. I won't rate this given it's a multi-part but I felt it did a good job establishing the story and who the characters are. This series was so ahead of it's time that it makes current animated shows look out of touch by comparison.

And shagging Xanatos. But, to be fair on the latter.... Dude is Pimp King Of The World. I honestly can't remember much about Broadway other than him being the big guy of the group but they already had Goliath and Hudson for that. Bronx is a good boy. What more do you need to know? Lexington was the Tech Goyle right?" Goliath is of course pure win for a kid's show and his relationship with Eliza and the others is fantastic. Demona less so but she's a total mess anyway. Still better than Felicity though! Eliza is smoking hot and a badass all in one. Definitely one of the best cartoon heroine's period. Her idiot brother less so but we'll roast him when the time comes.

Episode II The Thrill of The Hunt Introduces the Pack: A group of paid hunters, hired to play superheroes in a TV Show. An anonymous letter brings the attention of the Gargoyles.
Meanwhile, Lexington becomes intrigued with them and sneaks into their studio to meet with them. And we all know how that one plays out. As a kid, I never understood the endgame of Xanatos having mercenaries play superheroes on a Sentai show. That is until recently I figure it's part of a long con to draw the Gargoyles out. Since it is Xanatos I can see that as a possibility. I like the almost child-like innocence of Lexington in this. I've always depicted him as the youngest of the clan and while he has a rather idealistic mindset it's not to the brink of stupidity. Oh don't worry Derrick I'll get to you later. And when I do I have a special video just for you. I also like that, despite being humans The Pack poses a credible threat. To the point, they've got upgraded as recurring villains. They even have distinct personalities and motivations that make them more complex than just a group of faceless henchmen. What I find pleasing is that Lexington does but heads with Goliath but you can see it from his POV and he wasn't acting like a total ass. He wanted the clan to connect with the humans of the present day instead of wallowing in the shadows. The important thing to also take of note is that both Goliath and Lexington learned something from this experience. To be more accepting towards humans and to not leave yourself completely vulnerable. It's the kind of character growth I respect about this series. Overall I give this a Good Enough rating. The thing to take into account is that Gargoyles did what not many animated shows, even now, do. Each episode felt like a seed for an ever-growing story arc. You don't feel like you're watching filler because each episode had a purpose.

Also, everybody keep your eyes on Fox. She's going to become VERY important moving forward.

Episode III Temptation Brooklyn is enjoying a night out on the motorcycle he, along with Lexington and Broadway, built. When Brooklyn reveals himself before a group of bikers, they attack him assuming him to be a threat based on his non-human appearance. He is saved by the intervention of Demona, who then wishes to speak to him in order to plead her case before Goliath.O.K. I know this may come off as Demona bashing but I just want to set it straight. I don't hate the character. I hate this imaginary concept that people placed in their heads that Demona is this deep and complex character. She's not. There's nothing complex about her. She started off villainous and hasn't learned anything from her actions. Which is why I find this episode rather puzzling. This episode to me felt like a repeat of the last episode. With The Pack, I can see the deception as Lexington is the youngest and the most naive while The Pack hasn't done anything to be proven untrustworthy. Here Brooklyn is the oldest of his crew and a little mature when compared to Lex and Broadway. Plus she just flat-out betrayed The Gargoyles! Demona: "I must speak with you" Brooklyn: "You tried to kill us!" Demona: "That wasn't me it was Xanatos" Brooklyn: "Oh...well I suppose it won't hurt hearing you out. BTW. Speaking of Xanatos." Demona: "Whatever question you're thinking of asking after that. Don't" Oh she did btw Xanatos: "With that, I have no regrets at all" But seriously you can see why I have such a hard time believing how Brooklyn could be fooled by her. I mean after the incident with The Pack you would think Brooklyn's shield be all the way up in Demona's presence right? Overall I give this episode a Time Waster rating. Don't worry Brook. I still say you're nowhere near as dumb as Derrick. Oh homeboy's time is coming!

Right? The fact that the show tries to make her come off as a master manipulator is a little laughable. She doesn't have the patience or the temperament to pull it off. She tried when she was in her human form but lost whatever power she had by snogging up with a clone of Xanatos and Goliath.

As a side note, the aftermath of City Of Stone would be the mother of all nightmare fuels! Oh we'll get to that one, Demona, don't you worry. We'll get to it.

Episode IV Deadly Force
Oh yeah I'm not going to bother giving spoiler warnings because it's a series that's over twenty years old. If anyone is going to get uptight over that then fuck off
Broadway watches a Western and becomes enamored with guns, even going so far as to start playing with Elisa's (loaded!) gun. He accidentally shoots her with her own firearm, and she nearly dies. Ashamed of his actions, Broadway runs and hides, and Goliath is convinced that Elisa's wounding is due to the criminal she's been pursuing, mob boss Tony Dracon. This is considered a Very Special Episode. You know? As cheesy as those are I do miss those. When done well it can leave a lasting impression. Like this one. Nowadays you'd usually watch the uncensored version but I remember seeing this for the first time when I was a kid. When Elisa got shot and was lying in a pool of her own blood. I was like Holy Shit! What made it effective was just how mundane the situation was. It wasn't over the top melodrama. And Broadway freaking out over it felt very human. You wouldn't get that kind of storytelling today. Unfortunately. What I liked about this episode is that this is kind of a loss of innocence moment for Broadway. In a way he's considered a teenager that dealt with a very adult situation. Yet he manned up and owned up to the issue and learned from it. It's situations like this that makes Gargoyles way ahead of its time. Even by modern standards. In a way it makes Broadway smarter than Derrick. Oh your time is coming son. Just wait. Tony Dracon I used to consider a generic mob boss. Now I've actually warmed up to him. Because he's whom the TV Tropes would define as a Hate Sink. He's a slimy mob boss that makes you want to root for Elisa and the Manhattan Clan to take down. I respect that you're supposed to hate him. Unlike Demona, whom the show was trying to make us pity. I'd pity Homelander before I'd pity that redheaded hypocrite! With Tony Dracon it's almost like he's aware that he's an asshole. He just doesn't give a fuck. You'd be surprised just how much that rings true in real life. You'd normally think this would be a filler? Nope. This carries on in about a few episodes. Unlike your usual animated show a character's actions have consequences. Over all I'd give this episode a Worth My Time rating. This is how to do a Very Special Episode properly.

Over all I'd give this episode a Worth My Time rating. This is how to do a Very Special Episode properly. In all fairness! Yeah, Demona is a crazy pants mess so no real sympathy there but you just have to feel bad for Broadway here. Not to mention the Realism Induced Horror in a Fantastical Story like this. It kinds of reminds me of that one episode from Static Shock but Gargoyles went one step further with it since they didn't have quite the same level of censorship to deal with. Plus, given that guns tend to not do much of anything in Cartoons it's even rarer to see them actually do something like that and to a main character at that! Nowadays they'd be reduced to a laser or something. While not quite the same thing, Power Rangers once managed to pull of an interesting Steroids Metaphor in Beast Morphers but that was for one episode. It IS funny though that Gargoyles managed to handle a Gun Safety Storyline all the way back in these days than CW ever could with Arrow AND Supergirl's efforts.

Episode VEnter Macbeth
As Xanatos' Prison sentence is about to end, a mysterious man comes forward with a proposition to take care of his Gargoyle problem in exchange for fulfilling his own agenda.
I cant help it guys I cant help it. I mean the show had an Immortal Scotsman. And I was heavily into Highlander The Series when this show was airing. So this is the episode that had The Macbeth debut. And there's more to him than just some generic hired mercenary that Xanatos recruited. Despite him being ageless he's still a normal guy capable of holding his own against The Gargoyles and continued to be a threat to not just them but Demona too. Huh? You don't need a plethora of powers pulled out of your ass to be a threat. Shigaraki! Of course there's a difference between Greg Weisman writing this show and some talentless hack. This isn't going to be a long review as I'm a little under the weather but I just want to say the more I re-watch the show the more I'm reminded why I loved it and why I find it ahead of it's time. Case en point most animated tv shows don't follow continuity all together yet we see that Elisa still recovers from the events from the previous episode. And that things between Xanatos and The Manhattan Clan have become intense to the point that the clan had to move out of their castle. This shows how to raise the stakes and that actions result in consequences. Overall I'd give this episode a Good Enough rating. A few episodes in and already it has done a heck of a job in expanding the worldbuilding. This may be the last review I'm going to be doing for this month but come 2023. Xanatos is back baby!

Get well soon bro!
