Stars glittered above the steep gabled roofs of the apartment building. The imposing peaks cast shadows onto the street in daytime, but at night the metallic shingles reflected hazy stars and harnessed the starlight as energy.
David King and his younger sister, Eve, also soaked in the starlight. It was dangerous to perch on the steep roofs, but they’d both experienced enough danger in their lives that there wasn’t fear. Their worries now lay more in the future, at least for Eve.
“I want to help people,” David said. His East Asian heritage gave him thick, dark brown hair he had to push out of his dark eyes. “I saved us from them, Eve. I want to keep helping people and be a hero, even here in Shepard.”
They’d found themselves in this strange new place by accident after they’d run away from their horrible home. Shepard was unlike any town David had even seen on Gaiaheim, a secret realm accessed through portal and ritual. Accidentally falling through a portal into Shepard changed their lives. Even though it had been around five months since they'd arrived they're still trying to process the surreal nature the town showcased.
“I’m not sure what I want.” Eve barely knew who she was. She wasn’t the child enduring abuse anymore. The newfound freedom was daunting. David was so sure of himself. “I’ll still help you. I’d never leave you. I…don’t know who I am, David. There are too many options.”
All Eve was sure of was that she was white with burgundy hair and freckles, and she wasn’t ready to tell anyone that she was attracted to women. David might understand, but he was asexual. Eve needed to make certain she was a lesbian before she told anyone. She was afraid of being wrong.
“That’s alright.” David encouraged
Below them, an automobile zipped through the street. A plume of glittery red smoke trailed behind, leaving traces of magic.
“You’re barely an adult, Eve. And I’m not much older. We’ve got time. What about applying to the Academy?”
Tires squealed. Sirens blared from the direction of the Magistrate’s Office. A motorbike sped by the apartment. The motorbike was painted royal blue and its rider wore full plate armor. The rider’s face plate was lowered, shielding the wearer from the bike’s loud siren.
Eve gestured at the motorbike. “Not the Sheriff’s. Do you think it’s Willow or the Lieutenant?”
David rubbed his chin. “Whoever it is, I doubt they’re thrilled to be working late because some guy decided to use magic in his steam-powered vehicle.”
The siren faded into the distance. They plunged back into peaceful silence that neither of them wanted to break. Later, they climbed down from the roof and slipped back into their two-bedroom apartment to get some sleep.
Distant sirens screeched through the night, drowned out by closer screams. On the edge of town, abandoned buildings awaited construction efforts. No one would hear the screams.

It sucks that characters as pure and loving as David and Eve had to suffer from abuse like that but at the very least they can be rest assured that they will find a home here in Shepard! The scene with the motorbike and what I assume is an accident is also interesting AND Shepard having abandoned buildings opens up limitless potential possibilities with a town that bizarre! This is certainly an attention grabbing opening bro! P.S.: For The Love Of GOD Stay Out Of The Dog Park.

“Go Emarius! Run!” A kitsune woman pressed a hand to a bleeding wound. Her eyes were wide and bloodshot.
Emarius, the kitsune’s young son, ran. A shot fired past his head, carrying the scent of gunpowder and steel. Emarius tripped. The next shot just missed him.
The attacker wore a hood that hid his face. The kitsune tried to wrestle the firearm away from him to protect her son, but the attacker shook off her hand. He backhanded her across the face.
Her knees crashed onto the ground. She closed her eyes and prepared for the inevitable as the attacker aimed his gun on her.
A tall, red-eyed, blond figure darted out from the darkness behind a building. A command and a flash of purple magic restrained the attacker’s wrists and forced him to his knees. The red-eyed figure knocked the weapon out of the man’s hand and pulled back his hood.
“Izzy, your restraints make this too easy.” In the dim light, the vampire’s red eyes flashed. Their long, platinum blond hair hung in their face. They grabbed the attacker by the chin and tilted his face up. “It’s Caliban. The rogue Huntsman we’ve tracked for weeks? We got him.”
Izumi Miyazaki knelt next to Emarius and helped the boy to his feet. Her eyes were a pale blue and pointed ears, the telltale sign of a witch, poked out from her waves of black hair. “Gabriel, hush. Don’t play with your food. We must get these two to safety.”
Gabriel rolled their eyes and knelt next to Caliban. “Hunting innocent supernaturals was never going to end well for you.”
Gabriel’s fangs sunk into Caliban’s neck. The woman looked away and protected her son from the gruesome sight.
Izzy helped up the mother, and her magic helped put pressure on the woman’s wound. “You were brave to fight him off. I apologize for our delay.”
The woman shook her head and hugged Emarius tight. “Thank you. We wouldn’t have made it without you.”
“What are your names?”
“Mari. And this is Emarius.”
Izzy steered them away from Gabriel’s feeding. “We’ve been tracking that guy for a while. Why were you out here?”
If Mari was nervous about her answer, she didn’t show it. “We’d been using one of the abandoned homes as a den. It was the only place I could find… He followed us.”
Izzy and Gabriel knew Caliban had been around this part of Shepard, but not why. It made sense that Caliban would hunt them at their most vulnerable. When they felt at home.
Unfortunately, their home was abandoned and made them an easier target.
“It’s not safe out here. I can offer shelter at the Safe Haven manor. We can’t be certain there aren’t other Huntsmen around.”
The Safe Haven manor was operated by the Haven Coven, the coven of witches that Izzy and her older sister were aligned to. The manor was a shelter for wayward supernaturals who needed protection and support. Mari and Emarius would fit right in.
Mari nodded.
“Great! Take this ring, it’s spelled to lead you to the manor. They’ll have medical help waiting. I have to clean up here, but I’ll visit you at Safe Haven.”
The kitsunes left.
Izzy marched toward Gabriel. Gabriel’s fangs were still buried in Caliban’s neck and their eyes were bright red from the fresh meal. “He isn’t drained yet?”
Gabriel detached their mouth. Caliban slumped forward into the magical restraints, but the magic vanished and Caliban’s body collapsed on the ground. Gabriel wiped their mouth clean with a handkerchief.
Despite the show Gabriel put on, they could sometimes be messy with their food. Izzy was just glad that Gabriel kept the gore to a minimum around Emarius.
Gabriel tucked the handkerchief away. “I wanted to savor it. I haven’t had a good meal in a while.
Not enough villains lately for me to sink my fangs into.” They only ate fresh when the human was considered a danger to Shepard. Otherwise, they drank donor blood, even if they preferred the fresh stuff.
“Dispose of the body. I’ll help them get settled, and write up a report for Izanagi,” Izzy said.
Gabriel held out a hand and Izzy slapped a hair elastic into their palm. “Your masc form has short hair, just shapeshift.”
“Where’s the fun in that?” Gabriel teased and twisted their hair into a bun. “One of us has to look cute dumping a body.”
Izzy was used to Gabriel’s teasing and left them to their work. It was going to be a long night. Stars twinkled, illuminating Izzy’s walk toward Safe Haven.
Note: To those curious about the inspiration this came from a particular scene from Supernatural.
We can both agree that was very out of character for Dean to do. Especially after that whole Gordon Walker mess. So I rectify it.

A nice badass rescue scene that has some anti-hero qualities but on a lighter shade because it was time to hero up and kick some ass! This is how the professionals get shit done! And yeah, that moment with the Kitsune was certainly one of the more disturbing moments of the series so it's nice to see the moment getting a rewrite that makes you pump your fist! Gabriel and Izzy-Bean are a really fun team! They're going to get along great with David and Eve. The King Siblings will be safe enough so long as they stick with them.

The Town Magistrate sifted through the reports on her desk. One report detailed her sister’s disposal of a rogue Huntsman. Another report stated an illegal magically-enhanced vehicle went speeding through Shepard’s streets until apprehended last night.
The third report was the one the Town Magistrate, Izanagi Miyazaki, picked up. An abnormal missing person’s case.
Izanagi glanced up. Her younger sister, Izzy, sat in one of the chairs opposite the desk. The vampire Gabriel stood in the corner, away from David King. David eagerly leaned forward in his chair. Eve King stood behind David. They were an odd group, and this was the first time Izanagi had them all in the same room.
“What are they doing here?” David glanced at Gabriel. Gabriel preened, running their hands through their short hair. “You said I’d get a chance to prove myself on my own cases. With Eve and Izzy’s help, of course.”
Eve rolled her eyes and Izzy fought down a chuckle. It was no secret that David wasn’t fond of Gabriel.
Izanagi offered the report to David. He thumbed through the information. “This isn’t a normal case. Last night, a woman named Panna reported her younger brother missing.”
“That sounds normal,” Eve said.
Eve didn’t mind Gabriel’s lurking. David was bothered because he considered bloodsucking immoral, even if Gabriel only ate evil people. Eve tried to be open-minded.
They hadn’t met under the best circumstances. When David and Eve fell into Shepard through a portal, they needed help adjusting. Izzy was one of the first people they’d met, but Izzy’s presence also meant Gabriel and Izanagi.
These connections conveniently allowed David to cut a deal with Izanagi and take cases to help the town. On the first case David shadowed, he’d paired with Gabriel. David was distrustful since the vampire wasn’t on a strict, donor-only diet.
Izzy considered Eve. It was going to be difficult to work together on this case if Gabriel and David were antagonistic. At least Eve seemed a little more settled than when Izzy had met her.
There was uncertainty, but it would fade.
“The teenage brother, Argos, had a popular vlog where he’d livestream his explorations of haunted locations. Panna claimed that he went to explore a location yesterday and nothing was livestreamed. She couldn’t contact him. The file includes a map to a supposedly haunted house off Thirteen Street. Up the hill.”
Being trapped by ghosts in a haunted house was different than a normal case. Ghosts weren’t common, even in Shepard. Witches, like Izzy and Izanagi, were more common. Witches were easily noticeable with their pointed ears.
Even if it meant working with Gabriel, David wanted this case. It was his chance to be a hero. “I’ll take it.”

Ah not a timeskip. More like the next day. As the opening explained that David and Eve have established themselves within the town for a good five months Ahhhh gotcha! Thanks for clearing that up! They've made themselves quite the team in that time! Has David met Thomas in this continuity yet or is that role for Gabriel?

I did a name change from Thomas to Gabriel as there’s a well known vampire named Thomas in another work of fiction and I wanted to avoid the comparison

The house sat on a hilltop on the outskirts of Shepard. It overlooked the whole town. It was a two-story home with a large front porch that didn’t look like it could hold a person’s weight. The stairs were collapsing. The peaked roofs were tall and without starlight-capturing shingles, just crumbling asphalt ones. Endless tar-black smoke pumped from the crumbling chimney. The smoke disappeared after rising a few feet like the house locked the smoke inside a force field. Gabriel adjusted their leather jacket on the broad shoulders of their masculine form. They grinned at Izzy and considered the rotten, crumbling stairs. Gabriel jumped onto the porch deck, skipping the three steps. “Don’t be scared babies, come on.” The front door softly shut itself after Gabriel entered. Izzy shrugged. “It’s getting dark. Let’s solve this thing fast.” Her magic helped the rotted steps support her weight. Then, she entered. Izzy left the front door wide open, but David and Eve couldn’t see her or Gabriel. “Where’d they go?” Eve asked. David stood still. “I won’t be able to use my powers in there, Eve. I’ll maybe have enough sunlight stored up for one thing.” Eve understood David’s concern. He didn’t go around telling people that he was a chimera. Chimera invulnerability and super strength powers were fueled by sunlight. Only Eve knew David was a chimera. Sometimes, Eve felt guilty that she hadn’t come out to him yet. “It’s just ghosts. Probably not much super strength can help with anyway. Come on, Hero.” Eve tested the steps. Izzy’s magic lingered and the steps held. Once on the porch, the wood cracked. Eve tried to move. The wooden boards split and became a large, rotten maw that consumed Eve. She disappeared into the porch and the boards settled back into place. “Eve!” David rushed to the porch. He slipped when one of the steps grabbed his foot. Wood splinters scraped at his skin through his pants. When he pulled his foot free, he tripped forward through the open front door. Inside the parlor, Izzy and Gabriel stared at the open door. The opening reflected visions of themselves like a mirror instead of showing the outside. “That’s… not what I expected.” Gabriel peered into the mirror and fixed their hair. “Keep going? We have to find this kid, right?” “Right. Let’s keep going and find Argos. The others will join us.” Together, the vampire and the witch set about exploring the house

Some real Monster House vibes with this one although on the more haunted style. Yeah the specters infesting this house are not playing around in the least! Even with magic and David's killer right hook they've got their work cut out for them! This is going to be FUN!

When David tripped across the threshold, he appeared in the house’s cellar. The cool, dark space had food storage, tools, and a horrific smell. Whatever food had been down here had rotted. David gagged. He is in a gothic labyrinth and the house itself bends reality to ensure he cannot escape. He had to find a way out.
Eve stood before a ghoul. He was a ghost, but the ghost was too nice of a word. He wasn’t overly tall or fat, but he had broad shoulders and floated an inch off the ground. Before arriving at the haunted manor, Eve did some research. She’d gotten access to old case files by asking Willow Morningstar, the Sherrif’s daughter. Years ago, orphaned children started going missing. Eventually, the townspeople realized the children disappeared near the manor hill. One child escaped and told Shepard law enforcement everything that happened in the home. The children were abused and tortured. Starved, sleep deprived, and beaten by the Lord of the Manor himself. While going over the research, Eve’s skin crawled. This Lord was as horrible as the people who’d raised her and David. She was glad to be away from them. “What’s your name, little girl?” Eve wasn’t a little girl. The title made her insides clench. Her mindscape pleaded no screaming for her to run. Get as far away from this man as possible. She couldn’t move. When she fell through the floor she’d been magically immobilized. “David!” She screamed, she hated the vulnerability she felt but she was running in pure survival mode at the moment. The ghoul put a hand close to his ear mockingly listening for her brother's response. "We know you have Argos here, give him up and we shall leave your manor" The ghoul chuckled. "I don't have him, at least not yet. He's lost within my domain, as are your friends, your brother, and you. But it doesn't have to be for your sake. Join Argos and become one of my children" “How did you—?” “You’re the Lord of the Manor, aren’t you? Price?” Eve asked. “Why yes, my dear.” Lord Price cocked his head to the side and considered her. “You are a bit old, but you’ll still fit in nicely with the rest. Leave those three fools behind and stay with me.”

Price?” Eve asked. “Why yes, my dear.” Lord Price cocked his head to the side and considered her. “You are a bit old, but you’ll still fit in nicely with the rest. Leave those three fools behind and stay with me.” And now things just went from bad to worse! Eve's been imprisoned by the monster causing all this mess and David is now stuck in a reality altering labyrinth! They just got there and the horrors of the house are already closing on them! This is going to be intense!
