"I still don't get it! How is this real? How is any of this real? How am I not dreaming right now?" Jack Smith asked as he filed into the old station wagon with the rest of his family.
"Careful dweeb. You don't want that gift horse to bite you." Jill teased him. "Who cares how we got the tickets? One of us probably entered a contest as a joke and forgot about it. It's fine. Lets just take the chance and have the Summer we deserve!"
"Yeah, you're right. You're right. Who even cares? The point is we ended up with the tickets so we're going to use them!" He responded with a cheerful laugh. "Come on dad! Gun that engine! Lets go!"
"Right on, son! That's the spirit! Even if we didn't plan on this happening, we can still enjoy it! If you ask me, this was a gift from the Lord above and it would be rude of not to enjoy it!" William Smith cheered his family as got the car running again, backed it off of the driveway and then began driving down the street.
"You know where you're going, right?" Sarah asked.
"Of course, of course! I can always find my way to any and all destinations! I never get lost, my love!" He laughed and began driving. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and everyone was wearing their best matching Hawaiian shirts. Despite his optimism though, William couldn't help but feel a twinge of nervousness as he put the key in the ignition. He had never won anything in his life, let alone a luxurious cruise for the whole family. Their lucky numbers must have really hit the jackpot this time. As they made their way along the highway, the scenery whizzing past in a blur of greenery and blue skies, Jill began to regale her sibling with stories of the various amenities they could expect on board the ship.
"I'm telling you that we are going to have the time of our lives on this baby! We are going to gorge ourselves on the greatest food in the world, the beat meals of our lives, get front row seats to the greatest shows ever in the history of the world, and we'll have...like...a GAJILLION things to do there!"
"Water Slides, Jill, Water Slides! We're going down freaking water slides!" Jack exclaimed excitedly. We had to sneak into Splash Resort to do that last time!"
"Twice! And you're beyond lucky you didn't get caught." Sarah called back to her kids.
"Ohhhh yyyeeeaaaaah! I remember that! Good times. Great times really. We were even able to buy some snacks with the money we saved doing that." Jill sighed with a fond smile.
"In my defense, that place was far too expensive for its own good! If they don't want people sneaking in? They should lower the price and bolster security." Jack pointed out. "We even had to swipe passes! For all the work we had to do we deserved to enjoy it."
"A fair point. Hey, by the way...you ever meet that girl again? You know? Orange-hair girl? Small? Cute as a button? You were too nervous to go talk to her? What was her name again? Started with an M?"
"I...no, I haven't seen her since and...anyway! I can talk to girls if I want. I just....need to hit it big first, alright? 'Cause we don't have a whole lot, Jill, I've got nothing to show. When we do have something to show off? Then I'll start strutting my stuff." Jack informed her. "And this cruise? This miracle cruise? It's going to be the start of a whole new chapter in our lives. Just you watch. I'm going to build off of this. I'm going to take this momentum and run with it. I'm going to be someone. I'm going to be a big shot. We all are. This is where it's all going to start. I promise." Jack swore to his family. "I promise." He repeated. "I'm going to hit it big one day and then I'm going to move us up in the world and I'm going to take of everyone. We'll have the lives we always dreamed of."
"Bro, it's cool, I get it, alright? I get it, I do, but we have each other? That should be enough."
"It's good, it's cool, and I love you all, but it can be better. I'm going to make it better."
Their conversation continued as they passed by the scenic landscape, Jack's words filled with determination and passion. Even though they had never been on a cruise before, or won anything of significant value, they couldn't help but feel a sense of hope and excitement about the future. Perhaps this was the beginning of a new chapter in their lives, a chance for them to leave their troubles behind and embark on an adventure together.
As they continued driving, William couldn't help but think about the stories he'd heard about people who won big on the lottery. Some of them ended up squandering their winnings, falling back into their old ways and even losing everything they'd worked so hard for. He didn't want that to happen to his family. He wanted to make sure that this opportunity would be the start of something great, something that would change their lives for the better.
Their car rolled on, the miles passing by as swiftly as the scenery. The radio played their favorite songs, the chatter of their family filling the cabin. It was a perfect summer day, and the world seemed to be their oyster. As they approached the harbor, they couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and anticipation. The massive cruise ship towered above them, its gleaming white hull shining in the sun. It looked like a floating city, a testament to the luxury and opulence that awaited them.
"Are you sure we're going to be allowed on, Dad?" Jack asked, his voice tinged with excitement and a hint of nervousness.
"Of course we are, son," their father reassured him, his grip on the wheel tightening. "We're the lucky winners, remember? I'm sure they'll have a special place for us."
Their mother smiled at them all, her eyes filled with hope. "This is our chance, you know. Our chance to create new memories. So lets forget our troubles and make them the best memories of our lives!"
