PrologueDanger Sense
Eve King
I find my older brother in the one place he usually hangs out in. Sitting cross-legged on the rooftop of our family home, his eyes fixed on the stars in the sky. He always felt a sense of peace up here, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whenever the weather is clear enough to see the stars in the sky it can be pretty peaceful.
I try to creep behind him but no matter how quiet I'd get he'd always manage to find some way to sense that my presence is near. "Hi sis, glad you could join me" he spoke without looking back. No matter how much he'd try to deny it I'd swear he has super hearing. That would explain a lot.
"Hey, I was wondering when you'd come up here" I sat next to him, pulling my knees up to my chest. The air is cool yet comfortable, I smile at the feel of the gentle breeze and let my hair out so the wind may blow through it. We didn't say much but sat in comfortable silence and take in the peaceful surroundings of our farming community just a few miles outside of Shepard. While David would glance at the stars, I'd look at our cornfield and marvel at the way the moon's light would shine down on it.
Despite the fact that David and I had very different backgrounds and experiences, we considered each other family. We weren't related by blood, but that didn't make our bond any less strong. It had taken us time and effort to become so close, especially after everything my mom had done to save me from that madman Equilibrium. Even though there was still conflict between us sometimes, I knew deep down I could always rely on him.
"Hey Eve, do you ever wonder about your purpose in life?" David asked.
I glanced at him from the corner of my eye. "No," I lied. Ever since Mom freed me and my Mother from that cult and saved us from that vampire, I had only been focused on reestablishing myself.
David turned to look at me, his bright eyes glittering. They reminded me of a wolf. My little brother was a man now and it made me proud. "I'm still figuring things out."
"Me too," he said with a grin that told me how much he had grown up while we were apart.
"But I know one thing for sure: I want to be a hero." His words surprised me; they were so cliché, but that was just how it was with him. He could never sit still and always needed to be doing something.
I clenched my fists, David had always wanted this. Ever since we were kids I had seen the gleam in David's eyes whenever he looked at a photograph of Cody, his hero, and older sibling, fighting against monsters with their superpowers.
I envied him, his passion and purpose already so clear before him while I still grappled with my own path. Should I follow in their footsteps and fight alongside them? Did I possess the same heroic fire that coursed through their veins?
"I don't know if I want to be a hero. But I want to do something important. Something that matters."
David nodded in agreement. "I know what you mean. I want to make a difference in the world, you know? Even if it's just a small one."
I let out a hearty laugh. "You know, I think you really have! You're an amazing brother."
David chuckled. "Aww, thanks, sis. You're alright too!"
We lapsed into silence again, content to just sit and enjoy each other's company.
Suddenly, a gust of wind picked up, and David's hat flew off his head. Without thinking, he lunged after it, his hand just barely catching the brim before it could sail off the roof. He let out a sigh of relief and put the hat back on his head.
I looked at him with a mixture of amusement and concern. "You're such a daredevil."
David grinned. "What can I say? I like to live dangerously."
I rolled my eyes but couldn't help smiling. "Well, just be careful, okay? I know you have your powers but I'd like to see you in one piece before you achieve your goal. Just promise me one thing"
"What is that?"
"Please, don't wear tights. It's too cheesy," came the reply.
"I'm not so sure about that; I think I'd look great in some tights," David joked, earning himself a punch on the arm.
Note: So in this scenario David and Eve has two mommies! Eves's mother who was saved by Cody from Carmella's roaring rampage of revenge campaign against the remnants of Equilibrium's cult.
